11. Prolactin Elevation and Breast Tissue Changes

Prolactin, primarily known for its role in milk production during breastfeeding, can significantly impact body shape when levels become elevated outside of normal lactation periods. Hyperprolactinemia, or elevated prolactin levels, can occur due to various factors including pituitary tumors, certain medications, stress, or other medical conditions, leading to distinctive changes in body composition and appearance. The most obvious change associated with elevated prolactin is breast enlargement and tenderness, which can occur in both men and women, though it's typically more pronounced in women. In women, elevated prolactin can cause the breasts to increase in size and become more sensitive or painful, sometimes accompanied by inappropriate milk production (galactorrhea). In men, elevated prolactin can lead to gynecomastia, the development of breast tissue that creates a more feminine chest contour.
